Light speckled dried kidney beans are popularly known as sugar beans in Zimbabwe. This variety is produced by all types of farmers - rural, small scale & commercial farmers in most parts of the country during the rainy season which runs from October through to April. Light speckled kidney beans are a healthy dish with high protein, complex carbohydrates, folate and iron. They are a major dish for protein building hence most notably a main dish in boarding schools, prisons, hospitals and clinics. To many farmers, light speckled kidney beans are a strategic cash crop because it can be produced in addition to the main crops and outside the usual planting season especially for small scale farmers and commercial farmers who might are able to irrigate their crops.
