Light Speckled Kidney Beans

Light speckled dried kidney beans are popularly known as sugar beans in Zimbabwe. Currently the most common is a new variety of this bean called Gloria. It has a high yield of 2,400 kg/ha in highveld & 3,000 kg/ha in lowveld. This variety is resistant to Bean rust & Bacterial blight and takes 93 days to mature. Light speckled dried beans are produced by all types of farmers - rural, small scale & commercial farmers in most parts of the country during the rainy season which runs from October through to April. Light speckled kidney beans are a healthy dish with high protein, complex carbohydrates, folate and iron. They are a major dish for protein building hence most notably a main dish in boarding schools, prisons, hospitals and clinics. To many farmers, light speckled kidney beans are a strategic cash crop because it can be produced in addition to the main crops and outside the usual planting season especially for small scale farmers and commercial farmers who might be able to irrigate their crops.
